Mark D. Zimmerman, ACSW - Executive Director
Janet Zimmerman, LCSW-R - Social Worker
Mark D. Zimmerman brings a varied background and wide range of skills to the job of executive director of M’Yad L’Yad. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from the University of New Orleans, and a Master of Social Work degree from Tulane University. He began his professional career at the New Orleans Jewish Community Center, where he directed children’s programming and the summer day camp. He later served as program director at the Tulsa Jewish Community Center.
Mark changed careers and entered the world of business, where he eventually served as vice president of operations of a manufacturing company with worldwide sales. A third career change found Mark entering the writing and publishing field, where he wrote and published a guidebook for Long Island families and a Jewish trivia book. Other writing included children’s poetry and parenting articles, as well as award winning children’s musical theater shows.
During this time, Mark also took on responsibilities as a lay leader in the Jewish community, where he served as a member of the Board of Directors of Solomon Schechter Day School of Nassau County as well as the Huntington Jewish Center. He chaired and/or served on numerous committees, working with teachers, community leaders, clergy, professionals and other volunteers
Mark is a member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers. In 2006 he became executive director of M’Yad L’Yad.
Janet Zimmerman’s resumé includes education, volunteer experience, and professional endeavors that combine to enable her to fulfill all of the varied requirements of the M’Yad L’Yad social worker position with skill and ease. After graduating from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Janet earned a Masters Degree in counseling at the C. W. Post campus of Long Island University, and then received a Master of Social Work degree from Wurzweiler School of Social Work of Yeshiva University. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.
She worked with senior citizens at the New Orleans Jewish Community Center, and worked for the Diabetes Association in Tulsa, Oklahoma. In New York she worked for the Arthritis Association before going into private practice, specializing in child therapy, divorce mediation and adult issues. She taught the social work component at the Jewish Family Educators Training Institute at SAJES (the Suffolk Association for Jewish Educational Services), and led numerous workshops on parenting issues at local schools, synagogues, and other institutions. Janet worked as a synagogue consultant for the Reimagine program of ECE (Experiment in Congregational Education) and currently leads divorce and bereavement groups at the Mid-Island Y, while also maintaining her social work private practice.
Janet’s volunteer involvement includes lay leadership positions at the Solomon Schechter Day School of Nassau County and the Huntington Jewish Center. She became the M’Yad L’Yad social worker in 2007.
